Review: Throw Throw Burrito

Updated: Jul 10, 2020

The yet-to-win-award-winning card game where your food fight fantasies come to life. ft. memory foam.

Throw Throw Burrito is a card game like no other. Rapidly passing and picking up cards to find sets of matching cards may lull you into a false sense of security, believing this is a harmless card game. Until the sound of your best friend erupts from beside you as they yell "BURRITO WAR" and suddenly everyone is running for dear life as adorable foam burritos are flying around the room.. and you dive to take cover.

The game is quite simple and is played with 2-6 players (or 2-12 with the kickstarter expansion, or two copies of the game). You start with a selection of cards in your hand and simultaneously all players pass and pick up a variety of cards to rapidly search for a set of 3 matching cards. Many cards are adorable (or weird) animals or objects, and whilst it is exciting to find 3 Religion Pigeons or Yellin' Melons to bag yourself a point - the real fun happens when you get a set of 3 burrito cards, which triggers one of 3 things.

When a player gets 3 "Burrito Brawl" cards, they immediately yell "BURRITO BRAWL" and the two players either side of them must make a mad dash to the nearest memory foam burrito and the first one to get hit, loses and they gain a "Burrito Bruise" which gives them -1 point. This may sound simple, but using other players as human shields is within the rules - so whether your friends have your back and defend you, or they betray you and duck at the last minute - friendships may get tested.

The second type of Burrito Card is "Burrito War", which is similar to "Brawl" but this time it's a complete free-for-all, where no person is safe and I usually opt to run away and hide rather than dive for a burrito in my panicked state. The first to get hit gains a bruise, which is often me as my hiding places usually suck.

The final (and arguably best) Burrito Card is "Burrito Duel". In this case, whoever gets 3 Duel cards yells "Burrito Duel" and the whole game instantly freezes. They now choose 2 people to go head-to-head in a western style battle to the metaphorical-death (we don't endorse actual western style battles to the death). They stand back to back and take paces as an ever-changing amount of numbers are called out until suddenly they shout "Burrito!" and you turn and throw that burrito right into your opponents face.. or you miss and have to run for dear life as you're chased down the street.

The person with the most points after all the bruises have gone achieves the "Fear Me" badge. If they win the second game as well, they won! If they don't, the winner of the second game and they have a back to back burrito Duel and the winner of that is crowned the king!

Why do we like it?

We own every game made by Exploding Kittens, simply because they make some of the best and most original games out there, and they're often good for larger groups - and Throw Throw Burrito doesn't disappoint. This game is so simple to learn and everyone who's played it has loved it so far.

This usually ends up getting brought out at hangouts during the summer as we usually play outside to get more space ..and to not break my TV. Although I have had to retrieve burritos from the depths of my hedge and neighbours gardens on several occasions. Sorry Cathy.

Plus, the burritos are super cute. Ours have definitely seen better days as it's not technically designed for outdoor use - but personally it's completely worth a couple of tatty burritos for the amount of fun we've had playing it!

...finally, who doesn't love an excuse to throw things at your friends?

TLDR: Play snap and throw things at your friends.
